15th Annual Mimico Village BIA Tulip Festival: A Touch of Dutch lives on!

By: Jennifer Turkenburg,
2016 & 2017 Festival Coordinator.

As Canadians, we are all geared up for Festivities like never before! As a country we will be celebrating 150 years as a nation, so the Mimico Tulip Festival has incorporated the theme: “Canada 150: What Makes Canada Great”. Our wondrous Tulips are decorated this year with this in mind. You wonʼt want to miss the unveiling of the Tulips on Tuesday, May 30th from 4-8 pm.

About 20 Etobicoke Schools and Churches participate annually in decorating our 4-foot Tulips that grace the Mimico Village from May to September. ( Royal York from Evans to Newcastle). The children and teens who participate are some of the brightest and most creative kids around. Please do support their efforts by coming over to see their artistic collaboration with their classmates.

There are plenty of other reasons to join them too: who would not like a weekday street party with loads of free stuff? The local BIA and the generous sponsors make sure that everyone has hours of fun. Check out this yearʼs line-up on and around our stage: Award winning Magician Scott Dietrich; a super cool Inflatable Obstacle Course; A Large Pirate Boat and Pirates; Free Food: Popcorn and Candy Floss; San Remo Cookie Decorating; A Skateboarding Demo; Live Music from the Mimico Childrenʼs Choir, a Teen Jazz Band and local kid entertainers. And more…

You can check out the full schedule of Events at mimicotulipfestival.com and follow us on social media. There will be something for all ages to delight!

Beyond the free entertainment, you can browse the much loved and ever expanding Vendor Market. We showcase local Artists and local businesses. The choices make awesome gifts for yourself or a loved one. Make sure you fill out a ballot to win one of many Raffle Prizes being given away at every table. ( Psst… There are still a few Vendor Tables left ) Within the Vendor Market, you can enjoy a charity BBQ too, so indulge!

I think it is important to share a bit of history this year: A touch of Dutch …

We can all agree that Tulips are the first sign of spring but fade too quickly. So that is why our Grand Tulips have a longer life and can be found until the end of Summer. Why are tulips so loved here in Mimico and throughout Canada? Think of the yearly Ottawa Tulip Festival. Many people are not aware that the tulips bulbs are an annual gift from Holland as a token of thanks to the Canadian Government. Did you know that during WW II that the Princess Margriet was born and given shelter in Canada when Holland was occupied by the Germans? Quite remarkable!

So this all further encouraged our love for Tulips across our nation. I also believe it represents the deep integrity Canadians carry as a people: All of us come from other lands historically, with the exception of the aboriginal/native peoples. When you see a rainbow of tulip pictures in Ottawa or in a someoneʼs garden nearby. I hope you can remember: We can all stand tall and proud like blooming Tulips, all colors blended, we have each been transported and reborn in this nation, just like the bulbs. And we are simply divine!   Letʼs all celebrate together with this in mind on Tuesday, May 30th from 4-8 pmFor any inquiries, please contact us at mimicotulipfestival@outlook.com
